Assisted Living Summit October 23 Columbus, Ohio
The Assisted Living industry is the fastest growing sector of the health care industry today. But with that growth comes more challenges such as government scrutiny, lawsuits, and reporters. Are you ready to handle this ever-changing environment?
What do the new assisted living regulations require in Ohio? What do the new Life Safety Codes have to do with my facility? Is my admissions process in sync with the latest trends? How can I use quality initiatives to help stave off further government regulations? These questions and more will be answered at this informative one day Summit.
This is not your typical assisted living conference. Specifically designed for owners, managers and executive leaders--in other words, the strategic thinkers and doers of your organization. 8:30 am - Check In and Continental Breakfast
9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. National Overview of Assisted Living and the New Quality Initiatives for Assisted Living – Dr. Lindsey Schwartz, National Center for Assisted Living
With the increased scrutiny by attorneys and government agencies, along with some bad press that the assisted living industry has received nationwide and in Ohio, the time has come to institute some Quality Measures! This session will provide an overview of our industry, including national trends and key findings of the federal government’s first national study of assisted living/residential care (the “2010 National Survey of Residential Care Facilities”) and then spotlight NCAL’s new Quality Initiatives designed specifically for Assisted Living.
11:15 - 12:15 Life Safety Code Life Safety Code violations are consistently among the top ten deficiencies in RCF surveys throughout Ohio and many changes are ahead as new regulations are being published. This session will provide pertinent and timely information on the requirements that are specific to RCF’s and how best to prepare your facility as more and more surveys target Life Safety Code violations.
12:15 - 1:00 pm Lunch
1:00 - 2:00 Nuts and Bolts of Assisted Living Admissions: The Admission Agreement Checklist - Jacqueline Anderson, attorney, Rolf Goffman Martin Lang Co, LPA
The admission agreement is the most important document to an assisted living facility. This document outlines both the financial and service terms of the facility’s relationship with its residents and is used as a reference in governing the relationship with the resident (and the resident’s family). The admission material is also important for establishing limitations and expectations that may protect a facility in potential lawsuit, and in laying the framework for successfully getting paid. This seminar will review the legally required elements that must be in all agreements, and also discuss important risk managements issues that all assisted living providers should consider addressing in their residency material. In addition, it will touch on certain intertwined subjects, such as pursuing collection for unpaid receivables and the possibility of discharge.
2:15 - 3:15 State and Federal Initiatives that Will Impact RCFs in Ohio - Kim Donica, Chief, Program Development, Long Term Care Services & Supports, ODJFS - Diane Dietz, Assistant Executive Director, Ohio Centers for Assisted Living
'We are an assisted living facility...we are mostly, if not all, private pay...we don't need to worry about Medicaid and Medicare.' Sound familiar? Well, this is no longer the case! This session will provide you with valuable, up-to-the-minute information on initiatives that will impact assisted living operators in the months ahead. The establishment of new level of care rules and a new assessment instrument. A demonstration project to integrate and manage the Medicare and Medicaid benefits of Ohio's dually eligible beneficiaries. The combination of Ohio's five waivers (including the AL waiver) into one, single waiver. These are just a few of the initiatives in Ohio you need to know about. Plus learn about CMS's revised definition of HCBS settings that could eliminate your facility from providing services to a growing number of Medicaid beneficiaries.
3:30 – 4:30 – New RCF Rules and State Update - Kristin West, LNHA, Vice President, Kemper Company and Cheryl Freed, Kemper Company
Are you ready for Ohio’s New RCF Rules? Ohio Department of Health has completed their five year rule review and will be issuing new RCF Rules before the end of this year! This session will provide an overview of the changes, as well as the top citations and survey trends that we are seeing around the state.
