With the start of Phase 2 ROPs right around the corner, attendees will hear implementation strategies and tips. This session will drill down into the ROP requirements that will have the greatest impact on the nursing staff and the facility.

2:15 pm Navigating the Path of Critical Thinking Through Clinical Scenarios

Application of critical thinking is essential to promote positive patient outcomes, improve work efficiency, and improved decision making. This session taught by certified nurse educators, will guide the learner to best practice resources, educational strategies, and application of learned content through small group activity. In addition, the learner will gain a broader perspective of how critical thinking through scenarios will inform their clinical decision making ability.

The new survey process, a hybrid between the QIS and traditional survey processes will begin November 28, 2017. With this new process is an extensive reworking of the FTags. Attendees will receive an overview of what is changing and how to prepare for this new process.

1. Social Media

Social Media issues can now lead to multiple immediate jeopardy citations for your facility. How can you manage the risk without implementing policies that are too strict and influence turnover of staff? This session will help managers bridge the gap of effective social media, happy employees, and safe residents.

2. MDS& Exception Review Update

Presented by: Maureen Wern
New changes are coming to the MDS and this session will provide attendees with a high level overview of the changes. Ohio has also initiated the revival of the MDS Exception Review process. Attendees will hear an update on this process and what to expect going forward.

3. Facility Assessments

Presented by: Shane Craycraft
Facility Assessments are a requirement of the new ROPs. Is your facility ready? Attendees will learn the requirements and expectations of the surveyors as well as tips and tricks to implementing these required assessments.

4. Antibiotic Stewardship

Presented by Jennifer Leatherbarrow, RN, BSN, RAC-CT, QCP, CIC
Improving the use of antibiotics in healthcare to protect patients and reduce the threat of antibiotic resistance is a national priority. Antibiotic stewardship refers to a set of commitments and actions designed to ?optimize the treatment of infections while reducing the adverse events associated with antibiotic use. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended the implementation an antibiotic stewardship program (ASP) and outlined the seven core elements which are necessary for implementing successful ASPs. The CDC also recommends that all nursing homes take steps to improve antibiotic prescribing practices and reduce inappropriate use.

5. Dealing with Bad Behavior in Healthcare Diversity and Inclusion

Presented by Dyann McDowell
The current political climate has increased harassment, bullying, and unacceptable behavior in the workplace. Many employers are dealing with the aftermath on a case by case basis but, it's time to draw the line of acceptable and unacceptable behavior. This session is designed to help identify the problem, steps needed to engage and educate employees and strategies to deal with bad behavior in the workplace.

6. PHQ9 & BIMS

Presented by: Maureen Wern
Providers continue to struggle with effectively managing the MDS especially with the quality measures. This session will provide attendees with the knowledge to accurately complete these two areas of the MDS while managing their outcome on the quality measures.

One of the most popular sessions at the BELTSS Core of Knowledge, be sure to join Dyann as she identifies the harmful effects of substance abuse in the workplace. Learn tips on how to effectively enforce requirements of your company's Drug-Free policy and the law as well as recognize signs of an abuse problem. You will leave this program with information on how to take effective steps to assist employees in getting help, while protecting other workers and the organization.

9. Quality Measures & New Reports

Presented by: Tammy Cassidy
Managing the quality measures effectively can have a positive effect on your five star, but not managing them effectively can also lead to a negative effect. Are you aware of and reviewing your SNF Value-Based Purchasing Reports? The SNFVBP Program rewards skilled nursing facilities with incentive payments for the quality of care they give to people with Medicare. Attendees will also hear how to manage these reports effectively.

Tammy Cassidy RN, BSN, LNHA, RAC-CT has over 21 years of long term care management experience. This experience includes roles as Charge Nurse, Director of Nursing, MDS Coordinator, Corporate Clinical Compliance/Risk Manager and Vice President of Clinical Quality. Ms. Cassidy is also a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator in the State of Ohio. She has worked with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, specializing in MDS, as a DAVE2 surveyor. Ms. Cassidy is certified in Gerontological Nursing, and is a Certified Resident Assessment Coordinator through the American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from Miami University. A major focus of Ms. Cassidy's is to raise awareness of the MDS process, correct coding, and reimbursement. She is the immediate past president of OANAC (Ohio Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators) and continues to serve on their board.

Shane Craycraft

Shane Craycraft is the Corporate Director of Clinical Service for the Health Care Management Group. He is a Registered Nurse, a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator and has been in the long-term care profession for 23 years. Shane has been very active in the Ohio and American Health Care Associations. He has served as an Ohio Board Member, the Chairman of the Regulatory Committee, Chairman of the Quality Committee, member of the AHCA Quality Improvement Committee and is a Chairman's Award recipient. In addition, he has worked with government agencies and served on the Board of the Person Centered Care Coalition.

Cathy Kreimer, BSN, RN
Risk Management Consultant


Cathy is responsible for the management and delivery of risk management services to an established Senior Living book of business. This includes clinical and environmental risk assessment completion, managing educational unit, conducting CE activity presentations, assistance with pre-litigation management activities, and action plan development. She has served as a Director of Nursing for nearly 10 years, and has over 25 years of experience in the senior health care industry. She is familiar with the survey process, quality improvement programs, the MDS process, and the Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement process. Cathy received her BSN from The College of Mount Saint Joseph in 1988 and shortly thereafter obtained her RN license.


Jennifer Leatherbarrow
Richter Healthcare Consultant

Jennifer Leatherbarrow, RN, BSN, RAC-CT, QCP, CIC is an RN and a graduate of the Kent State University School of Nursing with a BSN. Her career spans over 20 years of healthcare experience including nursing management, MDS and critical care. She has provided nursing leadership at both the acute and post-acute levels of care, including SNF. She is employed as a Clinical Consultant for Richter Healthcare Consultants. She works directly with LTPAC clients nationwide in areas of clinical education as well as EHR software implementation, training and optimization. She is an accomplished blog writer and author on current topics of interest to LTPAC providers. She is a frequent and high rated speaker to trade and professional association audiences across the country.

Regina Prosser
Ursuline College


Dr. Regina Prosser is the RN-BSN Coordinator at Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio. She is a TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer and fulltime faculty member. In addition to her academic position, Dr. Prosser has an extensive history in the specialty of geriatrics and has served in many nurse leadership positions in long-term care over her 30 years of practice. She has presented healthcare topics for OHCA, LeadingAgeOhio and presented her work in geriatrics at the national Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) conference. She is an American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Gerontological Nurse and Licensed Nursing Home Administrator in the State of Ohio.

Mandy Smith is the Regulatory Director of the Ohio Health Care Association. Mandy is a Physical Therapist Assistant, Nursing Home Administrator and Resident Assessment Coordinator Certified. She has many years of experience in long-term care and provides us with information at each of our Task Force meetings on what's new with survey and regulations.

Christopher Tost is a Partner at Rolf Goffman Martin Lang LLP. He has frequently presented on the topics of survey enforcement and resident discharge. Mr. Tost has represented a number of providers in the Ohio Department of Health hearing process, and has also aided facilities relative to discharge decisions, and the preparation of required notices. Christopher has been routinely selected as one of Ohio's 'Rising Stars' in the area of health care law by Super Lawyer Magazine

Maureen Wern
Wern & Associates, Inc.


Maureen Wern has been in long Term care for 40 years working in several positions from Floor Nurse to Executive Director of a 150 Bed SNF with a 75 bed AL. She founded Wern & Associates, a Long Term care consulting firm, in 1996. The firm focuses on several areas including MDS Education, Survey readiness audits, Quality Measure Management, Web Site development, Customer service Training and MDS Case Mix Management. Mrs. Wern is a nationally recognized Speaker serving as a Master Instructor for the NASPAC MDS certification program, a Board Member and an observer on the CMS STRIVE Task Force. She is currently on the Ohio Health Care Board of Directors, serves on the Executive Committee and Chairs the Convention Committee.
