A correct and complete ICD-10-CM diagnosis list is paramount to accurate Medicare reimbursement under the Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM). Having well trained staff members in accurate code assignment is crucial. This program will include information regarding the Official Coding Guidelines, best practices for accurate ICD-10-CM code assignment, how to avoid common coding mistakes, and the importance of principal/primary diagnosis identification.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their current ICD-10 coding book to the training. This workshop will feature many coding exercises and scenarios where the coding book will be used.

Objectives:

1. Understand the importance of ICD-10-CM coding relative to PDPM
2. Understand the use and importance of the Official Coding Guidelines
3. Understand why determining principal/primary diagnosis code assignment as a team is essential
4. Use Z codes appropriately
5. Identify common ICD-10-cm coding mistakes and how to avoid them
6. Better understand the importance of proper code sequencing.

Kelly Schroer, BS, MHA, RHIA, has worked in the acute care and skilled nursing sectors for the past 20 years as the director of medical records programs at both the facility and corporate level. She also developed a well-known medical records consulting company where she has supported numerous SNFs in Ohio. These various positions have given Kelly a broad knowledge base in health information management. At LeaderStat, Kelly provides both offsite and onsite support and training in medical record services, quality assurance and compliance via medical record documentation reviews, and education. She is an ICD-10-CM trainer, and assists facilities with the diagnosis coding processes. Kelly has a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Management from The Ohio State University, and a Master?s degree in Health Services Administration from Xavier University.

Continuing Education Credit:

This program has been approved for 6.5 hours of continuing education credit for nursing home administrators (Ohio BELTSS) and nurses.
