Maximizing Dignity of Residents with Dementia
March 24 Hilton Toledo 3100 Glendale Ave. Toledo, OH 43614 (419) 381-6800
6 CEUs for Administrators, Nurses & Social Workers
The Ohio Health Care Association in cooperation with the Ohio Alzheimer’s Association chapter networks are pleased to bring this program to the long-term care community.
The collective goal of long term care facilities and the Ohio Alzheimer’s Association chapter network is to help people living with dementia experience the greatest amount of dignity in the safest, most supportive environment. To that end we must work together to focus on the necessary skill areas and build on our shared strengths. This program is not a typical basic Alzheimer’s 101, rather the educational modules are designed for leaders in dementia care to dialogue and share knowledge about the practices that support the individual with a dementing illness in the most meaningful and dignified way. “Leaders in Dementia Care” Understanding terms is important to moving forward together. Leaders in dementia care are anyone on staff who has an influence on quality of life for residents living with dementia and within the overall program. These might include persons designated over special care units or a person simply designated as the dementia care champion in a facility. Beyond named positions, facilities often have people who are interested in dementia care and want to learn all they can regardless of their position (i.e., DONs, lead STNAs, activity professionals, etc.)

Our Program Goal: Using theories of person-centered care, evidence based research and best practice models along with experiential knowledge from both the attendee and the educators from the Alzheimer’s Association, we will together facilitate a dialogue and open discussion which will assist in the assessment, examination and utilization of existing and novel dementia care practices and strengths within long term care environments.
Education Objectives: At the end of the program participants will be able to… 1) Define quality dementia care. 2) Describe six essential skills areas to enhance/achieve dignity in dementia care. 3) List at least two tools in each essential skill area. 4) Analyze organization’s own practices of dementia care related to the six essential skill areas 5) Create an action plan to recognize strengths and implement practices to maximize dignity in dementia care in the attendee’s facility. What an attendee will gain based on current dementia experience/knowledge:
Basic Dementia Experience/Knowledge: This program will provide you a great holistic view of dementia care practice and give you many practical tools to improve your practice skills.
Moderate Dementia Experience/Knowledge: This program will challenge your dementia knowledge by looking at your practice from a holistic sense. You can benefit from discussions with other providers, the practical tools given to increase your knowledge base, and an opportunity to assess your center’s current strengths and areas for growth.
Advanced Dementia Experience/Knowledge: An advanced practitioner would be to bring team members to the program and use the program to foster discussion about current strengths and potential growth areas of their current organization in a holistic manner.
