Description:
Every individual who has a role in the care of the resident also plays a role in infection control, including the prevention and control of C diff. This session will review infection control regulations and what surveyors are looking for during annual survey. The mode of transmission for C. difficile, MRSA, influenza, Noro-like viruses, and VRE will be discussed, which helps understand related appropriate cleaning techniques. Standard precautions and transmission – based isolation precautions will be reviewed and why they are important to the entire team.
Objectives:
1. Review of CDC guidelines for Standard precautions and transmission based precautions.
2. Discuss current federal regulations regarding infection control F-441.
3. Review specific micro-organisms that are seen in long-term care facilities
a. C. difficile
b. MRSA and VRE
c. Influenza
d. Noro-like viruses/gastrointestinal illnesses
Speakers:
Diane M. Bonifas C-NE, BSN, RN-BC has over 20 of nursing experience in long-term care. Graduate of St. Vincent School of Nursing in 1987, went on to receive her BSN from The Ohio State University in 2008. Diane’s current position is Director of Clinical Services for HCF, Management Inc. since 1998 servicing the company’s nine northern care communities. Duties include; survey readiness, writing and implementing nursing policies and procedures (including infection control), medical record review, orientation of new Directors of Nursing, nursing staff education, monitoring case mix scores, risk management by working with company’s liability insurance carrier, and other duties assigned. For almost five years Diane has been an active participant in the Antibiotic Task Force Committee at the Allen County Health Department (ACHD). A sub-committee encompassing long-term care facilities and acute care hospitals in Allen, Auglaize, Mercer, and Van Wert Counties is chaired by Diane and a nurse form the ACHD meeting at least quarterly to discuss collaboration efforts for infection control.
How it will work:
One week prior to the teleconference, you will receive an email with the toll-free number and access code for your contact person at the facility to enter the teleconference, as well as any handout materials and continuing education request forms. The number and access code are only valid for one connection (phone line). Any additional connections will be billed the teleconference registration fee.
CEUs & Other Education Requirements:
Each program will include time for those participating to ask questions of the instructor as well as materials for facilities to utilize to facilitate follow up discussion as a compliment to their facility’s staff development efforts. Each participant will receive a certificate of attendance which can be used toward meeting the annual in-service education requirements for state tested nursing assistants in skilled nursing facilities (Rule 3701-17-07.1 (K) OAC).
The programs is approved for one (1.0) hour of credit for nursing home administrators and nurses. Individual attendance will be monitored throughout the call. Only those attending the entire call will be awarded continuing education credit. Upon receipt of your request for continuing education form, certificates will be mailed to the facility.
How much does it cost?
Facilities will pay just one low fee for an unlimited number of participants. The number and access code is valid only for one telephone connection at the location registered with OHCA. Any additional telephone connections will be billed for the registration fee.
Have a conflict the day or time of the call or just want other shifts to be able to hear the program? This program is being recorded and a cd-rom along with the handouts is available for purchase. CEUs are not available for listening to the CD.
