Program Description:

This seminar will focus on identifying, monitoring and prevention of infections in long-term care; the basics of transmission and ways of incorporating surveillance data into your quality assurance program. CDC guidelines and federal regulations will be reviewed with emphasis on isolation recommendations. Attendees will gain updates on multi-drug resistant organism (MDRO) prevalence and how to balance resident-centered care and a home-like environment while trying to prevent the spread of infections. The role of the Infection Preventionist as CDC and F-441 identify the responsibilities of that individual and how the whole team should be involved in infection control.
Program agenda:

8:30 am Check In & Coffee

9:00-10:30 am Information about the history of infect ion control, review transmission, what changed in the CDC guidelines in 2007 and the update of F-441 in 2009.

10:30-10:45 am Break

10:45-12:00 Discuss the role and typical duties of an Infection Preventionist in a LTC facility. Review goals for an Infection Control Program and ways to educate staff on the importance of incorporating Infection Control into all their duties.

12:00-12:30 pm Lunch

12:30-1:45 pm Review MDRO’s and other epidemiologically important pathogens in LTC . Discuss general surveillance, including rounds and record review.

1:45-2:00 pm Break

2:00-3:15 Discuss surveillance in more detail; describe methods to analyze surveillance data. Review ways to incorporate surveillance data and other pertinent information into facility Infection Control and Quality Assurance and Improvement programs.

Program Instructor:

Diane M. Bonifas C-NE, BSN, RN-BC
has over 20 of nursing experience in long-term care. Graduate of St. Vincent School of Nursing in 1987, went on to receive her BSN from The Ohio State University in 2008. Diane’s current position is Director of Clinical Services for HCF, Management Inc. since 1998 servicing the company’s nine northern care communities. Duties include; survey readiness, writing and implementing nursing policies and procedures (including infection control), medical record review, orientation of new Directors of Nursing, nursing staff education, monitoring case mix scores, risk management by working with company’s liability insurance carrier, and other duties assigned. For almost five years Diane has been an active participant in the Antibiotic Task Force Committee at the Allen County Health Department (ACHD). A sub-committee encompassing long-term care facilities and acute care hospitals in Allen, Auglaize, Mercer, and Van Wert Counties is chaired by Diane and a nurse form the ACHD meeting at least quarterly to discuss collaboration efforts for infection control.

This program has been approved for 5 hours of continuing education credit for nursing home administrators and nurses.
